Martin House

Hackney Downs, London

Martin House is one of the last remaining functioning textile warehouses in Hackney Downs. This project proposes to repurpose part of the site to provide affordable co-working space to serve Hackney’s local creative community. A single storey brick warehouse was identified as the ideal location for the office building.

The proposal seeks to vertically extend the existing warehouse to provide an additional first-floor mezzanine space. A newly constructed steel roof will span across the existing warehouse and include large fixed glazed panels, allowing light to fill both the ground and first floor of the warehouse. Additional materials are being kept to a minimum to keep the focus on existing materials and textures, which include large steel window frames, deep blue brick piers and copper shutters.
